Frequently asked questions

What does this calculator show?

What a monthly SIP would be worth today had every instalment bought the Nifty 50 on its SIP date, and its return. Enter what your own SIP is worth today to compare the two on the same dates and amounts.

Which Nifty 50 figures does it use?

The Nifty 50's closing value on your SIP day each month, or the next trading day's close when that day is a weekend or market holiday, and the latest close to value the units. The closes go back to September 2007.

Are dividends included?

No. It uses the Nifty 50 price index, which leaves out the dividends its companies pay. An index fund also collects those dividends and charges its own costs, and taxes aren't included either, so a real fund's result would differ.

How is the return worked out?

Once the first instalment is a year old, as XIRR: the yearly return that accounts for when each instalment went in, the same measure brokers and mutual funds use for SIPs (you can check it with the XIRR calculator). Before that, as the gain over everything that went in, because turning a few months into a yearly rate exaggerates it.

Does this tell me what will happen next?

No. It shows what happened in the past, which doesn't tell you what will happen in the future.
